Top 10 two-wheeler manufacturers and their market share: Hero MotoCorp down 4.7%, TVS up

High cost of ownership, bad rural feeling, working from home and the latest omicron threat continued to impact sales – FADA President Vinkesh Gulati

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) today released vehicle retail data for December 2021. The bulletin indicates a substantial drop in two-wheeler retail sales of 19.76%. While two-wheeler manufacturers in India collectively sold 14,333,334 units in December 2020, retail sales fell to 11,48,732 units in the same month in 2021. Compared to pre-COVID 2019 December , retail sales of two-wheelers fell 9.94% from 12.75,501.

In terms of market share, Hero MotoCorp remains at the top of the list with a market share of 34.50%. However, the manufacturer’s market share fell by 4.7% compared to December 2020 when it stood at 39.20%.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India remains in second place, occupying a share of 24.80 percent, or just over 24.59 percent as of December 2020. TVS Motor Company continued to increase its market share by 0.81 percent, from 14.34 percent to 15.15. percent in December 2020 and 2021, respectively.

Brands that have experienced positive growth also include Bajaj Auto Ltd, which increased from 11.28% in December 2020 to 12.50% in December 2021. Suzuki Motorcycle India’s share increased from 3.16% to 3, 71%.

Then came Royal Enfield, which saw its market share drop from 3.59% to 3.49% in December 2021. India’s Yamaha Motor share fell from 3.01% to 3.28%.

“The high cost of ownership, bad rural feeling, working from home and the latest omicron threat continued to impact sales,” said FADA President Vinkesh Gulati.

“December is generally considered a high sales month where OEMs continue to offer the best discounts to clear inventory due to the change of year. This was not the case this time around, however, as retail sales continued to disappoint, ending an underperforming calendar year. “
