2022 Honda CB500X Review [16 Fast Facts: Adventure Motorcycle]

The Honda CB500X returns for its 10th year in service with several updates to further tweak the well-composed mid-size all-rounder. The adventurous personality of Honda’s three-bike CB500 line, the 2022 Honda CB500X is a capable, unintimidating motorcycle with broad appeal. The parallel twin produces predictable power in a comfortable chassis that accommodates novice riders and anyone looking for a reliable, versatile ride.2022 Honda CB500X Review: For Sale

  1. From conventional vanilla to an inverted Showa SFF-BP fork, the new CB500X improves front suspension clearance. The 41mm inverted fork reduces flex and sharpens steering, just right for a bike that can venture off-road. Separate function fork design – Big Piston sequesters spring and damping action – one in each tube – saving weight. Without riding 2022 back-to-back with last year’s model, it’s hard to quantify the difference between the forks. However, a stronger fork gives more confidence up front, allowing you to ride more aggressively. In a nod to the price of the CB500X, the front suspension remains non-adjustable.
  1. The non-adjustable adventure suspension does a competent job over a wide range of road conditions. On a favorite test course that includes smooth canyon slaloms, miles of tight turns and fast sweepers over bumpy, failing asphalt, the CB500X takes it all in stride. I was very happy with the amount of advantage he took while allowing plenty of feedback that got me in control of my speed where it needed to be.
  1. Twin 296mm rotors replace the single 310mm rotor for 2022. While the single disc stopping power was quite adequate in previous years, the dual discs are an upgrade and they look cool. Nissin calipers squeeze the petal rotors, and the feel at the five-step adjustable lever is spot-on. There’s just enough play before the initial engagement that no one gets caught. The harder you squeeze, the stronger the braking and ABS remains standard. Plus, there’s enough compression braking, so you can just drop the throttle to slow down before canyon turns. As you ride more aggressively and downshift harder, you’ll appreciate the traction control feature of the traction control/assist clutch to help prevent rear wheel hop.

2022 Honda CB500X Review: Specifications

  1. A redesigned swingarm and radiator, along with thinner spokes, contribute to a five-pound weight saving for the 2022 Honda CB500X. Now tipping the scales at 439 pounds with the 4.7 gallon fuel tank full, the 500X is easy to handle and well balanced. It’s responsive without being jittery, exactly what you want to ride around town on.
  1. Other changes for 2022 include revised fuel injection settings and increased forward weight distribution.. These are changes that are difficult to recognize individually, but lead to an overall improved ride. More weight on the front tire adds a bit more grip and feel, and fuel injection mods are designed to improve torque output.
  1. Yes, the mid-size engine of the CB500X is “enough”. The 471cc DOHC engine produces plenty of power for zipping around town, zipping along a fast highway, and performing sporty runs through canyons. Pleasant in every way, it will neither surprise nor disappoint you. From 2500 rpm to around 7500 rpm, torque output is virtually flat, giving you a nicely responsive motor with plenty of easy-to-manage utility.

2022 Honda CB500X Review: Price

  1. The engine really excels in its broad niche, although you don’t get much in store. It’s harder to make a quick move if you’re already at full throttle on the freeway and leveling slightly. However, if you drive the CB500X with that in mind, you’ll be pretty happy with it.
  1. A strong twist of the throttle lets you enjoy a lively ride, and the ADV ergonomics complement/enhance the experience. I ran a speed test—on a closed course, I think—to see how fast the 500X would go. The Honda wiped out all three LCD digits, although the engine worked hard and benefited from a slight downshift. You don’t have to go that fast, of course, but it’s always good to know where your limits are.
  1. The CB500X’s ergonomics are comfortable for everyday use and accommodate a wide range of riders. The upright driving position is pleasant and practical, offering a good view of your surroundings. Hand and foot controls are naturally located, with the clutch assist feature making the pull incredibly light. Also, the 32.8-inch seat height isn’t particularly exclusive. It’s thin where it needs to help bring the boots to the tarmac, so my 30.5-inch inseam kept me away from being flat-footed at the stop.

2022 Honda CB500X Review: Adventure Motorcycle Test

  1. Off-road excursions are quite viable on the CB500X. I haven’t done extensive testing on dirt roads as that would involve changing to dirtier tires, but I can report that my off-road excursions have left a favorable impression. The bike is no handful, and the low-end torque and neutral power kept the handling drama free. The 19-inch front wheel helps the bike trail confidently in loose conditions, and you have over seven inches of ground clearance to work with.
  1. Dunlop Trailmax Mixtour tires on 19- and 17-inch rims are believable on sidewalks and dirt roads. Designed to handle both street roads and the occasional dirt road, the tires allowed me to push as much as I wanted through the canyons with confidence, and the rubber also had no argument with the grooves of rain on the highways. If you ride exclusively on the street, you will need more road-oriented tires. For those with regular doses of dirt, get something with pimples.
  1. If you travel on two wheels, the CB500X covers all the bases. The upright ergonomics keep your peripheral vision wide, the slipper and assist clutch allows for a light pull on the lever, and the bike is narrow enough to squeeze through congested lanes even with its wide handlebars. The even torque curve provides smooth usable power perfectly targeted at city speeds, and the Adventure Suspension handles any road conditions you’ll find on your urban/suburban ride.

  1. The windshield has two height positions, but requires tools to change it. Decide what’s right for you before you start your ride, as you’ll need a hex wrench to remove eight bolts, reposition the windshield, and then reinstall the bolts. The standard position was high enough to send most of the freeway wind at me to avoid fatigue. Installed in the 1.5-inch top position, I didn’t notice any material benefit in wind protection, but I was more aware of the CB500X pushing through the air.
  1. One of the benefits of a mild-mannered mid-size bike is excellent gas mileage. The LCD dash keeps track of the engine’s current and average fuel economy, and it’s not uncommon to see the CB500X average 60+ mpg. Depending on how you ride, you could go 300 miles with the 4.7 gallon tank. Don’t wait for that last bar to start flashing, even if you theoretically have around 30 miles to spare – range anxiety ruins your ride on remote roads.

2022 Honda CB500X Review: Commuter Motorcycle Test

  1. Cargo haul options are available, along with a handful of other accessories to customize your CB500X. Whether you’re gearing up for weekend adventures or just needing cargo capacity for commuting or running errands, Honda Genuine Accessories offer a set of saddlebags, a trunk back and a tank bag. Other functional items include a center stand, hand guards, heated grips ($345!), 12-volt outlet, and light bar (an attorney-approved name for a crash bar).
  1. There’s a reason the CB500X has endured for a decade—Honda hasn’t lost track of its crowd for this accommodating bike. It targets a wide range of riders looking for an easygoing and versatile bike. Neither sexy nor boring, it’s your dependable best friend, ready and willing for whatever the day calls for, whether it’s weekday chores or weekend hobbies. The 2022 Honda CB500X is a motorcycle you’ll never have trouble justifying to anyone why you’re buying it.
